SANTA FE POLICE DEPARTMENTa week agoAgencyBest Buy Murder Suspect Arrested In Las Cruces Santa Fe, NM – August 11, 2024, On Saturday, August 10, 2024, at approximately 6:33 p.m., Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch Authority received an armed robbery at an Arby’s located at 2341 E. Lohman in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The suspects, Zachary Babitz and an unknown female, fled the area and committed a secondary armed robbery (carjacking), taking a Silver Impala. They then crashed in the vehicle, and attempted to flee on foot, but the Las Cruces Police Department was able to apprehend Mr. Babitz outside of 2445 Missouri Avenue. The unidentified female was not apprehended and is still being searched for. Mr. Babitz was arrested on an arrest warrant obtained by the Santa Fe Police Department for the fatal shooting of 83-year old Gordon Peter Wilson of Santa Fe. Mr. Babitz has been criminally charged with Murder Willful and Deliberate, Armed Robbery, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Mr. Babitz was also booked on a second arrest warrant for a Robbery that occurred in Bernalillo County. Additional charges will be forthcoming from the Las Cruces Police Department concerning the events in Las Cruces. Mr. Babitz was recently released from prison in March of this year. He has an extensive criminal history, including Possession of a Controlled Substance, Robbery, Possession of a Deadly Weapon or Explosive by a Prisoner, Receiving or Transferring a Stolen Motor Vehicle, and Out-of-State Fugitive criminal charges. The Santa Fe Police Department would like to thank the Las Cruces Police Department for apprehending Mr. Babitz and taking a dangerous repeat criminal off the streets. Thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of the San Juan County Sheriff's Office, the United States Marshals Service, and the New Mexico State Police, Silva is now in custody. We are relieved that no one was injured in this dangerous incident. SANTA FE POLICE DEPARTMENTa week agoAgencyPolice Arrest Felon in Possession of a Firearm After Shots Fired Call Santa Fe, NM – August 13, 2024, On Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at approximately 6:15 a.m., Santa Fe Police were dispatched to the area of the Walmart, located at 5701 Herrera Drive, in reference to a report of shots fired. The caller stated they heard approximately four gunshots in the area; it was also reported a male was running across the street to a black sedan leaving the area. Officers responded and located spent shell casings and a live round of ammunition on the ground. Officers spoke with a female on scene who stated an unidentified male approached her in an aggressive manner and asked what she had inside her vehicle. The female and male got into a verbal altercation at which time the male returned to his vehicle, later identified as a black Toyota Scion. Once inside his vehicle, the male stuck his left arm outside the vehicle’s window and fired a gun into the air multiple times. The female got in her car and drove away in an attempt to flee from the male, who then chased her in his vehicle before he fled the area. Through the course of their investigation, officers identified the suspect as Nathan Lawson, 37, of Santa Fe. Upon identifying the vehicle and Mr. Lawson, officers issued a be on the look out broadcast with the information to surrounding agencies. Shortly after the broadcast, officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle at Herb Martinez Park, located at 914 Camino Carlos Rey. Upon arrival, officers located the suspect vehicle as well as Mr. Lawson. At the conclusion of the investigation, Mr. Lawson was arrested and charged with Assault with the Intent to Commit a Violent Felony, Shooting at/or from a Motor Vehicle, and Receipt/Transportation or Possession of a Firearm or Destructive Device by a Felon. Mr. Lawson has an extensive criminal history to include Robbery, Armed Robbery, Aggravated Battery Against a Household Member, and Burglary. This case remains under active investigation, and as additional information becomes available, it will be provided. Case number 2024-009365.
